Why is today the longest day of the year in India?

In India, June 21 is the longest day and shortest night of the year. This phenomenon is called 'summer solstice' and it occurs when the Sun is above the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N latitude), causing the Earth's northern hemisphere to be closest to the Sun. In the Southern Hemisphere this phenomenon occurs between 21–23 December.
